Soft pastel on Canson Touch paper
15 x 19" (prior to framing)
Merlin is a magnificent Andalusian with the exquisite, delicate features so typical of the breed. A small mouth, delicate ears, and those intelligent eyes. His incredible mane will flow down over his face and neck when completed. A study in the beauty and majesty of this smaller, but highly versatile breed, with a fierce intelligence and courage that makes them a pure joy to interact with, let alone ride!
In this painting I'm using a looser, more painterly style on the body and focusing the detail work on his face to bring it forward towards you. Rich layering of colours reflect the complexity of this grey horse, because when you take into account lighting, surroundings and even the underlying skin colour - nothing is ever a simple grey, but a combination of blues, rusts, pinks and more!
